Ellyse Perry aims to fill MCG, SCG at T20 World Cup 2020

Australia Women news

Such has been the rise of women’s cricket over the years that Ellyse Perry has set a target of filling out arenas such as the MCG and SCG at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia in 2020.

The final of the Women’s Big Bash League on Saturday, 26 January, between Sydney Sixers and Brisbane Heat was a big hit, with the Drummoyne Oval being sold out with a capacity crowd of 5368.

Reports suggested more people had to be turned away at the gates – some watched the game on a giant screen outside and others on hill that offered a good vantage point of the proceedings.

For Perry, personally, it was a disappointing day as Sixers lost to Heat, but this brought a smile.

“Hopefully, that puts us in really good stead," Perry said. "I'm obviously disappointed we lost today, but it's hard to stand here without a fraction of a smile on my face.

"Just looking at that hill all day, the way it was covered throughout the week, the fact that I'm standing in front of a big group talking about it shows how we've come.”

In fact, there is already talk among the players of potentially filling out the MCG – the largest in the sport with a capacity of 100,024.

“We've got some lofty goals for the T20 World Cup next year in terms of filling the SCG and MCG for the semis and the finals,” said Perry. “Given the success we've had, the platform we've built in this competition, I'm really excited about it.”

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup will be played from 21 February to 8 March 2020.
